As I recover from the shock of the presidential election, my commitment to serving the people of Cambridge has redoubled. More than ever, I am grateful and proud to live and serve in a city where diversity of all kinds is celebrated, not merely tolerated, and where inclusion, social justice and human rights are so highly valued and so vigorously defended. This election underscores why we must never take for granted our hard-won freedoms.
It’s more important than ever to support Democratic women: I’m running for re-election in 2017.
I had hoped to be able to announce my decision to run for re-election during a time of joy and hope following the election of America’s first female president. In light of the outcome and the uncertainty about how new federal policies may affect cities and states like ours, we will need strong, progressive and compassionate leaders to act as a bulwark against whatever Washington throws our way. I feel that it is more important than ever to support Democratic women who run for local office, which is I recently participated in Emerge MA’s”Grassroots through Glass Ceilings” celebration of women in politics.
I’m working hard. How am I doing?
I hope that over the past 11 months I have earned your trust and respect, and that you think I have lived up to my campaign promises to be responsive to your concerns and to put in the time and effort necessary to be well-prepared to contribute thoughtfully and fairly on difficult issues. I’ve always been a hard worker, but I can honestly say that I have never worked harder at any job. Or loved one more! Being a city councillor is a tremendous opportunity to learn, and good student that I am, I want to excel in this role. I think I’ve made good progress in the first half of my first term, but I know that there’s always more work to do — so I very much hope that you will help re-elect me next November.
Virtual kickoff!
I would like to ask that you consider making a donation before the end of 2016. State campaign finance law allows individuals to make donations of up to $1,000 in each calendar year. Once again I will not be accepting donations from special interests like real estate developers or lobbyists.
Prior donors
If you made a donation to my campaign in 2015, please consider giving at least half of what you gave last year before the end of 2016. A year-end gift will help me be ready to launch my 2017 re-election campaign in the spring and not spend time fundraising that would be better spent doing the work you elected me to do.
Everyone else
If you did not make a donation to my campaign last year, please consider making a gift of any size now to send a signal that you appreciate the work I’ve been doing and want to see me continue doing it.
How to donate
You can make a secure donation by credit card through this website. The orange DONATE button above takes you to my online donation page.
Or, you can mail a check payable to Devereux for Council to: 255 Lakeview Ave., Cambridge, MA 02138.
Thank you for the thoughtful suggestions and kind words that you have sent me over the past year. I look forward to hearing from you and to seeing you around town.
